Some remnants of the Erie Canal survived for some time after being abandoned, but later succumbed to commercial growth, road, building, etc.
Enlarged Erie Canal Lock No. 66 was located in Rochester, N.Y. at the junction of Monroe Avenue with the canal. Lock 66 was a double lock, lengthened at the foot on the berme side, with a lift of 9.53 feet to the west. The lock was dismantled during the conversion of the canal bed to the bed of the interurban trolley line. At present, the site of the lock is part of Interstate 490 through the Swillburg section of Rochester.
Enlarged Erie Canal Lock No. 44 was located in Ilion, Herkimer County, N.Y. Lock 44 was a double lock, lengthened at the foot on the berme side, with a lift of 11.00 feet to the west. In May 1936, it was photographed in the process of being dismantled. The photographer was Walter H. Cassebeer, who photographed the process for the Historic American Buildings Survey.
